Located on the edge of Dillon Montana the Dillon Town Overlook Trail is a fairly new creation by the Beaverhead Trails Coalition. It's so new that other than an entrance sign and small parking area there are almost no trail markers or even developed trails for that matter. I'd rather call them routes. The area also lacks toilet facilities and water but come on - it's new. What it does have is good views, interesting terrain, wildlife viewing (pronghorn, whitetail deer, bald & golden eagles on my last outing) and proximity to Dillon. The terrain is so open (no trees) that getting lost would be difficult.
The terrain is also fairly challenging with steep climbs and quick descents making the Dillon Town Overlook Trails a great place to start preparing for the summer hiking season. I'm trying to hit my favorite route everyday, using it to test out new rainwear and new lightweight boots as well as getting my legs in shape for longer outings yet to come. It only takes about an hour at my pace to cover three miles making this area a great place to stretch your legs if passing through Dillon or to kill a lunch break if you live or work in town. Either way, take advantage of this great location on the edge of town.
